A five-minute drive from Orosí along Ruta 408, Hacienda Orosí is a huge family-friendly attraction with alfresco thermal hot springs, an animal farm, a restaurant and cafe, hiking and birdwatching opportunities and a coffee-farm tour. Visit and soak for the day, or spend the night at its premium hotel.
Thermal Hot Springs
Set up for peak indulgence, the seven thermal baths of Hacienda Orosí overlook the valley and beyond, seemingly floating over the landscape. Each pool is 37.7°C (100°F), and you can luxuriate and bathe in the steaming water or take advantage of a comfy deck chair nearby.
Overnight guests can use the thermal baths, but you can purchase a day or night pass, which includes a locker and towel as well as the animal and coffee farm experiences. You can also opt for spa treatments, such as exfoliation and mud masks, at an extra cost.
Coffee Tour & Animal Farm
Hacienda Orosí sits on ultra-fertile coffee-growing land and has an animal farm (La Granja de la Hacienda) that's perfect for children. You will walk a lot on the coffee tour, and some of the area is a bit steep, so wear comfortable shoes and bring ample sunscreen and water. Tours run between 8am and 4:30pm daily, with the last tour leaving at 3pm.
Stop by the charming red-painted barn to see cows, horses, peacocks, pigs and ducks. The cows at Hacienda Orosí are a unique, long-horned variety. The barn is near the starting point for the coffee tour, so it's a convenient place to stop before or afterward.
The tour itself goes up the side of a small nearby mountainside and includes 5km of hiking, where you'll have the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and spot some of the 225 species of birds that call this valley home. Along the way, you'll learn about where the coffee beans come from, the harvesting practices and how the beans are roasted. If you're not up for the climb, you can always check out the area around the coffee tour, which has plenty of signage, bean-sorting machines and friendly folks who can answer your questions in English and Spanish.
Coffee Pickers' Village
Wake up to the intoxicating aroma of fresh coffee before you even brew your first cup at the coffee pickers' village. These individual villas balance rustic-inspired designs with modern amenities and can host up to six people per lodging.
You'll have your own fully stocked kitchen and enjoy free breakfast at Hacienda Orosí' restaurant. Costs vary depending on the time of year – the high season is generally more expensive – and which villa you choose. It's a good option for families who want to spend extra time in the valley, enjoy the hot springs, have animal encounters and do some hiking.
