Great Zimbabwe Museum

Head to the Great Zimbabwe Museum before you start exploring the site to prep yourself and gain some insight through the informative displays there. They have numerous soapstone bird totems on display, Zimbabwe's national symbol. It's located a short walk within the entry, across from the kiosk.
