Furneaux Museum

Graced with an elevated location above Emita Beach on Flinders' west coast, the volunteer-run Furneaux Museum (furneauxmuseum.org.au; $10) records the history of the Furneaux Islands. Around the grounds are whalebones, blubber pots and rusty ship propellers, evidence of Flinders' whaling history. The interior focuses on local flora and fauna, muttonbirding and the stories of longstanding island families. The museum's Aboriginal section includes beautiful shell necklaces and a display about the nearby Wybalenna Historic Site, the misguided settlement where 134 Tasmanian Aboriginal people were relocated from mainland Tasmania in 1834.
