Built in 1834, Fort Laramie is one of the great landmarks in the history of the American West. Built as a fur trading post, later a military garrison fort, it witnessed the inexorable expansion of white settlement and the wars that devastated so many tribal nations, not to mention the often-picaresque moments of life on the frontier. In summer, park rangers in period clothing roam the grounds.
