The verdantly twisting picturesque Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, topped by waterfalls and carved out by the river Fjaðrá, has been well and truly discovered, thanks to Instagrammers and one Justin Bieber (who filmed a video clip here). The view from the viewing platform at the top is simply glorious – gaze into the gorge's gorgeous rocky, writhing depths and emerald-green surrounds, with a crashing waterfall to one side.
The main parking area (follow the signs for Fjaðrárgljúfur) leaves you with a 2km uphill hike: it's a decent climb, but takes you past three viewpoints. The much smaller top car park (good for people with limited mobility, follow the signs to Laki) is 500m from the top of the canyon. Both cost 1040kr per vehicle (parka.is). We strongly recommend the longer walk from the lower car park.
The canyon is just west of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, 3km north of the Ring Road via Rte 206.
