The largest-known Roman residence in Britain, Fishbourne Palace has an area larger than Buckingham Palace. Lying just off the A259 1.5 miles west of Chichester, and chanced upon by labourers laying a water main in the 1960s, this once-luxurious mansion was probably built around AD 75 for a Romanised local king, though debate still swarms around the owner's identity. Housed in a modern pavilion are its foundations, hypocaust and painstakingly relaid mosaics. Take bus 700 from outside Chichester Cathedral.

The centrepiece is a spectacular mosaic floor depicting Cupid riding a dolphin, flanked by sea horses and panthers. There’s also a fascinating little museum and replanted Roman gardens.
