This viewpoint peers deep into Rainbow Canyon, aka Star Wars Canyon, created by lava flows and scattered with multihued volcanic cinders. It's worth a quick stop on your way in or out of Death Valley. With any luck, you get to witness US Air Force and Navy fighter jets zooming through the canyon on training runs. The parking lot is about 8 miles west of Panamint Springs.
For another grand desert panorama, follow the half-mile trail starting east of the parking lot.
