Ely's soaring Gothic Cathedral’s was dubbed the 'Ship of the Fens' because its towering spire was visible for miles across the vast, flat sweep of Cambridgeshire. It's an eye-catching structure, best known for the fascinating 14th-century Lady Chapel, which has been preserved much as it was at the end of the English Civil War, after iconoclasts had hacked and defiled most of its delicate statues.
Inside, cast your eyes upwards to admire the striking Octagon, which transfers the weight of the tower onto eight monumental columns. There's some stunning stained glass (look out for the masons hard at work raising the Tower of Babel), and the attached Stained Glass Museum has panels collected from across Europe.
Tours of the cathedral and tower were suspended at the time of writing, but should resume, so check ahead. Evensong shows off the building's impressive acoustics; check to see if visitors are able to attend.
