Built in 1535, with additions made in 1541, this well-preserved Portuguese fort with its double moat was one of the most important Portuguese forts in Asia. It is a pleasure to wander its ramparts – some of which are walkable – and admire the superb array of cannons, learn about its many bastions, see its empty chapels and enjoy sweeping views of the ocean. Give yourself an hour, ideally in the early evening, for a scenic, leisurely walk. Finish at the more recent lighthouse, which is Diu’s highest point. If you're after a deep dive into the fort's history, Make it Happen (makeithappen.co.in) conducts comprehensive tours (₹499 per person).
