This idyllic, 324-hectare, beautifully landscaped estate on the edge of Llandeilo incorporates a deer park, an Iron Age fort, pasture, woods, a 12th-century castle and a 17th-century manor with a Victorian Gothic facade. The highlight is the serene parkland, though. There are several marked walks: keep your eyes peeled for fallow deer and one of only a few remaining herds of the very rare White Park cattle, an ancient breed once common in Britain.
Most will want to clamber to the substantial ruins of Dinefwr Castle, on a hilltop in the southern corner of the estate. Fantastic views fall away from its battlements across the Tywi to Brecon Beacons National Park. Once the seat of the lords of Deheubarth, whose power and influence spread across South Wales, in the 17th century it suffered the indignity of being converted into a picturesque garden feature.
17th-century Newton House is presented as it was in Edwardian times. Other rooms recall Newton's WWII incarnation as a hospital, and the former Billiard Room is now a tearoom.
