Ciyou Temple

The 18th-century triple-tiered Ciyou Temple, dedicated to Matsu, the black-faced Chinese goddess of seafarers, is Taipei’s blingiest. So come here at night for the full effect (and then fill your belly at Raohe Street Night Market). One of Taipei's busiest and most-colorful places of worship, it has some gorgeous rooftop decorations — the jiǎnniàn (剪黏; mosaic-like decoration) is particularly vibrant. Make sure to explore deep into the belly of the temple, and slip up to the 2nd floor to explore the opulence and color of the shrines.
