Many visitors overlook this gem due to it being somewhat off the beaten track, but the Church of St Joseph is a marvel of baroque architecture that's well worth a detour. Consecrated in 1758 as part of the Jesuit seminary, it features a grand staircase leading to a courtyard where you can admire the church’s striking white-and-yellow facade and dome – the oldest of its kind in China. Inside, there are three altars embellished with intricate overlapping pilasters and mesmerizing Solomonic spiral columns. Visitors can browse though an exhibited collection of rare holy relics and fascinating artifacts, including a bone fragment from the arm of the missionary St Francis Xavier.
