Beneath a hemisphere of corrugated iron in a manicured park lie just the foundations of a 5th-century stupa. Originally 12m tall, it was one of the eight original locations in which Buddha's ashes were buried. The soapstone relic casket found was stored for years at the Patna Museum but a vast new stupa with explanatory Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum is being built to house it and provide suitable veneration possibilities.
