Bronx Zoo

This 265-acre zoo, operating since 1899, is the country’s biggest and oldest, with over 6000 animals and re-created habitats from around the world, from African plains to Asian rainforests and lots of feeding sessions and demonstrations. In springtime, you'll usually see some baby animals too. It’s deservedly popular; timed-entry tickets help with crowding a bit. Wednesday tickets are discounted ($18); reservations open Mondays at 5pm. Coming by subway, head for the southwest Asia Gate on Boston Rd.
