Nestled among the cottonwoods 0.5 miles north of Colorado River and 0.5 miles south of Phantom Ranch Canteen, Bright Angel is a spectacular spot to hunker down after the arduous trek to the canyon bottom. Wade in the marvelously inviting Bright Angel Creek, pop into the ranch canteen for a cold drink and snacks, and reserve family-style breakfasts and dinners in advance.
Campsites, each with a picnic table and fire ring, can only be reserved through a backcountry permit request through the Backcountry Information Center and are available for a maximum of two consecutive nights (four nights November 15 to February 28).
The only way to reach Bright Angel is by hiking; most folks hike Bright Angel Trail or the South Kaibab from the South Rim, or the North Kaibab from the North Rim. These are maintained and NPS-patrolled trails. If you don't want to carry your pack, you can arrange for duffel transport from the South Rim.
