Just north of Braemar village, turreted Braemar Castle dates from 1628 and served as a government garrison after the 1745 Jacobite rebellion. In 2007 it was taken over by the local community, which now offers guided tours of the historic castle apartments. The castle interior was closed in 2020, but the grounds were open for walks and picnics.
