The basin, cut from solid rock in 1868, is a good place to orient yourself in Wollongong. The harbor beach is great for young children, with sand and gentle waves.
Conditions are good for canoeing and kayaking in this relatively sheltered area.
Between here and North Beach there are swimming pools and a swimmable rock pool.
