The cottage where the great American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie was born in 1835 is now a museum. Carnegie emigrated to the US in 1848 and by the late 19th century had become the richest person in the world, but he gave away 90% of his wealth to build libraries, universities and schools all around the world. Dunfermline benefited by his purchase of Pittencrieff Park, beside the palace.
