Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail

Diehard sun worshippers can access South Kohala's signature beaches via a 6-mile stretch of the 175-mile Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. You'll also pass pristine shoreline and natural anchialine ponds (pools which provided the ancients with drinking water).

From the north, start at the southern end of Spencer Beach Park, where you'll pass thick kiawe groves until you reach Mauʻumae Beach and eventually the Mauna Kea Resort Area, including the renowned golf course. After you navigate the Hapuna Beach, the trail continues down to Beach 69. The whole hike, especially the last leg, is scorching. Of course, you can turn back at any point, and can start at any point along the way.
