Mongolian Heroes’ Memorial

Mongolia

Like a socialist realist lightning bolt, this masterpiece of Stalinist monument-chic features a soldier on horseback flying straight towards the enemies of the motherland. Behind the monument, a horseshoe arch decorated with mosaic tilework depicts cavalry stampeding into battle, and brave soldier wives holding down the home front. A small Soviet tank next to the monument saw action during the 1939 Khalkhiin Gol war.
