Welcome to Lake Ohrid

At 300m deep, 34km long and three million years old, shared by Macedonia (two-thirds) and Albania (one-third), Lake Ohrid is among Europe's deepest and oldest. The Macedonian portion is inscribed on the Unesco World Heritage list for its cultural heritage and unique nature – it's considered the most biodiverse lake of its size in the world.

To the east of Ohrid lies Galičica National Park with mountain villages and Magaro Peak, which can be summited. To the south, a long, wooded coast has pebble beaches, churches and camping spots. In summer the big, resort-style hotels and beaches can be unpleasantly crowded but there are better spots beyond them.

Full day tour of Ohrid with St Naum from Skopje

Known as cultural, artistic and education centre in the Slavic world, it holds its roots from the XIV Century BC, in the area known as Desaretia. In the Ancient time, known by the name of Lychnidos (the City of Light), it became an important trading centre. Always attractive for various conquerors, the city was fought over by Romans, Ostrogots, Crusaders, Byzantines, Ottomans and many other invaders.     In the IX and X Century AD Ohrid became a cradle of the Slavic literacy, in the times when St. Clement of Ohrid established the First pan-Slavic University in Europe. By the end of the X and beginning of the XI Century, Ohrid was the centre of Samuel’s Empire. As an important Christian place of pilgrimage, Ohrid became a place where new styles of fresco and icon painting were found (appearance of the first elements of The Renaissance in 1295), as well as specific sacral architecture (St. Clement, St. Sofia, St. John of Kaneo, etc.). In the medieval times it was the Seat of Ohrid Archbishopric. A city with 365 churches in XIX Century, and with more than 50 active churches today and certainly, a city built on the shores of one of the most phenomenal natural beauties – Lake Ohrid, is a central Macedonian tourist destination.Ohrid and Lake Ohrid are on the list of world protected heritage sites of UNESCO since 1980. At every hundred meters you will encounter significant sights.Without doubts, St. Naum monastery is one miraculous place, located near the springs of the river Crn Drim (river that flows out of the lake at the town of Struga, on the opposite side of Lake Ohrid), this monastic complex lies in strongly protected area, as a part of National Park Galicica. Its crystal clear spring water looks like a mirror, reflecting both vegetation from the surroundings and the high peaks of the beautiful mountain behind.Built on the rocky hill right above the lake, the monastery of St. Naum is one of the most beautiful pilgrimage spot in Macedonia. At the end of IX Century, St. Naum himself had chosen this noble wilderness to continue his incredible mission that served to the enlightenment of local community in the Dark Ages. He was considered to be a healer and miracle-maker, which is witnessed by several fresco paintings in the grave chapel in the church. The church itself is dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel and inside there is a unique baroque-style iconostasis from XVIII century and fresco paintings with figures wearing outfits from the end of XVIII century.
