A Day of Wild Horses, Archaeological Relics, and Your Farmhouse Oasis

Overview

After yesterday’s thorough Cagliari tour, the time has come to kick off the road trip aspect of this trip — and head to your next destination. You’ll depart Cagliari after breakfast, and head up the island until you reach the beautiful plateau of the Giara di Gesturi. Here, you’ll meet a local expert guide, and learn all about Mediterranean maquis, a form of thick, evergreen shrubs. While exploring, keep your eyes peeled for the site’s famous wild horses, known as cavallini. Next on the docket — or before, as today’s sites are distanced by just about 30 minutes — you’ll switch your focus to archaeology. You’ll discover the island’s most important archaeological sites in Su Nuraxi di Barumini. Built around 1400 B.C., it’s the only UNESCO-recognized site in all of Sardinia. You’ll also visit the Archaeological Museum of Casa Zapata, the ancient residence of a noble family who ruled the country during the Spanish period. Who knows? Maybe you’ll have the chance to apply any fun facts or lessons you picked up on yesterday’s trip to Cagliari’s National Archaeological Museum. After these visits, you’ll drive to a magical farmhouse, where you’ll check in for your night’s stay. Relax on the peaceful grounds before settling in for a homemade dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner)

Highlights

Su Nuraxi di Barumini

Revealed from excavations in the 1950s, Su Nuraxi di Barumini consists of an impressive stone complex, built in different phases of history. Parts of the site originated from the 15th century BC, while a larger village of huts developed around the structure in the following centuries. Since 1997, this site has garnered UNESCO recognition, and, as you'll discover on today's visit, it's something of a playground for the past.

Giara di Gesturi

Witness wild horses in their natural habitat during today’s guided tour of the Giara di Gesturi. This basalt plateau doubles as a nature park that accommodates all kinds of flora and fauna. During your guided visit, keep your eyes peeled; you never know when you’ll run into a playful goat or, if luck persists, the special cavatelli, whose Italian name may sound like a type of pasta but actually, directly, translates to “little horses.”

Accommodations

Domu Antiga Farmhouse (or similar)

Stay in a valley surrounded by the silver of olive trees and the green of snaking vines. At Domu Antiga Farmhouse, you'll enter a dreamland in a 19th-century home that's undergone renovations for maximum comfort. From your historic room, feel the joys of nature and rediscover the dimension of a time out of time. The farmhouse invites you to savor a new, slow rhythm, all the while bread bakes in an ancient wood-fired oven and birds harmonize with lullabies just outside your window.
