As you leave Cody, the road quickly climbs into wide-open high desert terrain, before winding through dramatic mountain landscapes shaped by glaciers and volcanic activity. Because you’re driving on your own, you’re free to stop at any point, whether for detours, snacks, photo breaks, or surprise animal sightings. Just before you cross over the border and into Montana, you’ll pause at Mammoth Hot Springs. Here, mineral-rich water flows over limestone to create constantly changing formations of white, gold, and rust-colored travertine. The result? A breathtaking site of natural wonder and your introduction to this area’s one-of-a-kind beauty. From here, you’ll continue about 15 more minutes to check into your hotel. Now, you’re mere miles from the Yellowstone gates, so you can sit back and soak in the view. For the next few days, it isn’t going anywhere.
