Overview
Your road trip begins today, as you’ll say your goodbyes not only to Cody but also to Wyoming ... at least, for now. This morning, you’ll make your way to Gardiner, Montana, by way of the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway. As you leave Cody, the road quickly climbs into wide-open high desert terrain, before winding through dramatic mountain landscapes shaped by glaciers and volcanic activity. Because you’re driving on your own, you’re free to stop at any point, whether for detours, snacks, photo breaks, or surprise animal sightings. Just before you cross over the border and into Montana, you’ll pause at Mammoth Hot Springs. Here, mineral-rich water flows over limestone to create constantly changing formations of white, gold, and rust-colored travertine. The result? A breathtaking site of natural wonder and your introduction to this area’s one-of-a-kind beauty. From here, you’ll continue about 15 more minutes to check into your hotel. Now, you’re mere miles from the Yellowstone gates, so you can sit back and soak in the view. For the next few days, it isn’t going anywhere.
Highlights
Scenic Drive: Cody to Gardiner
Today’s drive leads you along the spectacular Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, one of the most picturesque routes in the American West. During today's self-driven journey, you’ll pass through sweeping alpine meadows, rugged canyons, and expansive overlooks with views of the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains. Named for the Nez Perce leader Chief Joseph, the byway combines striking scenery with a deep sense of both history and place.
Mammoth Hot Springs
During today’s road trip, you’ll explore the striking terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs — a treasure trove of colors and geological marvels. Take both the boardwalks and short paths to wind past features like Minerva Terrace and Palette Spring, which offer close-up views of this unique hydrothermal landscape. As you move through the thermal area, you'll also learn how heat, water, and geology interact to shape such a dynamic structure, contextualizing the beauty of Yellowstone's nature.
