Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Elephants of Minneriya National Park
Overview
For a day that feels like a dream, start by stepping back in time. This morning, you'll visit the famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress: one of the area’s — nevertheless Sri Lanka’s — most renowned locales. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya invites visitors to summit its steps, so you can see the surrounding landscapes from way above and the rock from way up close. If you're up for a climb, you’ll hike the steps to the top of this ancient rock fortress, where you’ll encounter palace ruins. The site also features beautiful gardens and elaborate frescoes that create a marvel of both natural and artistic significance. When you’re done here, you'll switch your focus to wildlife as you head to Minneriya National Park, a major elephant habitat. Within the park, you’ll participate in a guided safari, with the opportunity to view elephants, among other animals, in the wild. Once a year, the park sees one of Asia’s largest elephant migrations, when hundreds of these majestic mammals gather together. Once you've gotten all the glimpses of nature, you’ll head back to your Sigiriya hotel, with the rest of the night wide open to reflect on everything you've just witnessed. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Highlights
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Now that you've settled into Sigiriya, you’ll get to see its signature attraction: Sigiriya Lion Rock, the hulking rock fortress that stretches roughly 200 meters high. While the site speaks for itself, its story is equally compelling. Built by King Kashyapa I centuries ago, the fortress harbors the ruins of the Sinhalese Kingdom and overlaps with legends, myths, and histories that draw visitors to its fabled grounds.
Minneriya National Park Safari
Known for its yearly elephant migration, Minneriya National Park is a crown jewel of Sri Lanka that houses all kinds of wildlife. This afternoon, you'll partake in an adventurous safari tour with a park ranger, during which you'll have the chance to observe the diverse species of wildlife that inhabit this special park. In addition to elephants, a spate of monkeys, leopards, deer, waterbirds, and more animals call this place home, so keep your eyes peeled — and your binoculars handy.
