Magical Mayhem of Bangkok’s Railway Market and Kanchanaburi's Wonders

Overview

Rise and shine, because today’s guided tour starts early, taking you to Samut Songkhram, home to the famous Railway Market. This morning, you’ll meet your local expert guide at your hotel, and be driven about an hour and a half away to the market, where vendors sell all kinds of Thai delights. The market's crown jewel, however, is its location; the market sits in the center of a still in-use railway, where trains periodically pass through the market’s core. If you prefer a later start, you can skip the Railway Market and depart later in the morning. The drive from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi takes approximately two and a half hours, and you'll head northwest into the Kanchanaburi Province, passing through a series of scenic rice paddies. Upon your arrival in Kanchanaburi, you'll visit the Burma Death Railway Museum and nearby War Cemetery, which honors the war prisoners who perished during the construction of the infamous railway. You'll also visit the iconic bridge over the River Kwai and, if time permits, enjoy a short train ride along the historic route. Later in the day, you'll take the boat to check in to your floating villa, settling in for an unforgettable evening in a truly unique locale. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Highlights

Railway Market

At first glance, the Railway Market appears to be a typical street market, with vendors selling everything from grilled skewers and mangoes to crabs and sugary drinks. But when the train’s whistle blows, the entire market transforms. Vendors quickly pack up their stalls, fold back their awnings, and make way for the train to pass right through the market — a fascinating display of local ingenuity. This spectacle occurs multiple times throughout the day, providing a unique and photogenic experience.

Kanchanaburi

This fascinating alcove of western Thailand lays claim to a series of signature hallmarks, which include the Burma Death Railway Museum, Cemetary, and the Bridge on the river Kwai — all of which you'll visit upon arriving here today. Among the destination's lesser-known highlights, however, your hotel likewise invites a memorable stay, as you'll spend the night suspended over the river in a floating villa, immersing yourself in Kanchanaburi's lush and tranquil environment.
