Overview
Collect your rental vehicle in Adelaide and begin the journey north toward the magnificent Flinders Ranges. This is the longest single driving leg of your trip, taking you away from the city and into the vast landscapes of South Australia's interior. As you travel north, look out for the community sculptures near Dublin, including the Tin Man and Flying Saucer. Continue toward Port Wakefield and Port Pirie, where the landscape begins to feel increasingly open and remote. Along the way, you'll pass the Barunga Ranges and one of the region's large wind farms before reaching Port Augusta, a regional hub where the Outback meets the coast. Continue inland through Quorn, one of the Flinders Ranges' historic townships, before arriving in Hawker, often regarded as a gateway to the Outback. This is a sensible place to refuel and pick up any essentials before continuing to Rawnsley Park Station. Your home for the next three nights is a working sheep station nestled beneath the dramatic scenery of Wilpena Pound. After checking in, you'll have time to settle into your Eco Villa before heading out again for a memorable sunset excursion. In the late afternoon, join the Sunset on the Chace small-group tour. Travel across the property in a 4WD vehicle, looking for native wildlife before reaching Yaltaordla Hill for a spectacular 360-degree panorama. As the sun sinks behind Rawnsley Bluff and the Chace Range, enjoy a sparkling wine or beer accompanied by freshly prepared canapés. Meals: Breakfast provisions at the accommodation; beverages and canapés on the sunset tour
Highlights
The Road to the Outback
The drive from Adelaide to the Flinders Ranges is an adventure in itself, passing through regional townships, agricultural landscapes, and increasingly rugged terrain. Stops around Port Augusta and Quorn offer glimpses into the history of South Australia's interior, while Hawker provides a final opportunity to refuel and prepare for the more remote landscapes ahead.
Rawnsley Park Station and Wilpena Pound
Set at the foot of Wilpena Pound, Rawnsley Park Station is a 12,000-hectare working sheep station surrounded by the striking geology of the Flinders Ranges. Its combination of rugged scenery, open skies, and native wildlife makes it an exceptional base for exploring one of Australia's most ancient landscapes.
Sunset on the Chace
A 40-minute 4WD journey takes you across the property to a scenic lookout where the late-afternoon light transforms the surrounding ranges. Enjoy sweeping views from Yaltaordla Hill, with Rawnsley Bluff and the Chace Range providing a dramatic backdrop. Sparkling wine or beer and canapés make this an especially memorable introduction to the Outback.
