Limestone Cliffs and Otherworldly Formations of the Desert's Tsagaan Suvarga

Overview

Awaken in your traditional yurt and enjoy a hearty breakfast at your camp before heading out on your day’s adventure. Over the course of this exciting day, you’ll cover significant ground — 460 kilometers, to be exact — on a journey of roughly seven and a half hours. While this may seem like quite a long route, the ride promises to bring you through the magnificent formations of Tsagaan Suvarga: an area full of 30 meter-high white limestone formations. In addition to these Mars-esque rocks, you’ll also gawk at the mind-blowing colors that paint the desert floor, creating a one-of-a-kind dreamscape. During your trip to this natural wonderland, you’ll have the chance to take a hike along the bottom area, stretching your legs and getting close to spectacular desert views. When you’re done for the day, you’ll check in to your next ger camp and enjoy another traditional dinner in the kind of environment you simply can't capture in pictures. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Highlights

Tsagaan Suvarga

If you didn’t know you were in Mongolia, you may confuse Tsagaan Suvarga for Mars — or a dinosaur era badland. This ethereal landscape combines steep cliffs, clay formations, and deep canyons, creating a naturally-occurring environment that resembles a science fiction movie set. During today’s visit, you’ll hike around this incredible landscape, marveling at the wonders of geology. If you time your visit right, you may even see the landscape light up during golden hour, when the sun hits the limestone in all the right ways.

Ger Camp

Just like you did last night, you’ll spend tonight — and some nights to follow — in a traditional and well-designed ger: a quintessential Mongolian camp that mirrors a yurt in construction and composition. These comfortable canvas tents are extremely durable and, while they’ve adapted to host tourists, they have longstanding roots in Mongolian culture. Historically, gers have been inhabited by rural Mongolians, who designed them as portable structures, intended to suit nomadic lifestyles.

Accommodations

Ger in Tsagaan Suvarga

Tonight you'll be staying in a yurt or "ger" inside Tsagaan Suvarga. The yurts are modeled on traditional Mongolian design with modern creature comforts. A central metal stove heats the yurt, which is decorated with beautiful handcrafted furniture and a painted ceiling. Showers and bathrooms are in a separate facility.
