Overview

Football is an integral component of English culture, but London exceeds any one stadium. You’ll have the entirety of today to experience the British capital as you’d like, with free time to visit any neighborhoods, museums, or pubs that speak to you. That means, you can enjoy a leisurely English breakfast with — of course — a cuppa, before heading out to the city’s landmarks. If you haven’t seen the classics yet, you may want to start the day by watching the red-cloaked guards of Buckingham Palace, before visiting Trafalgar Square and the nearby museums. You can’t go wrong with a trip to the National Portrait Gallery or, just a short walk away, the behemoth British Museum. Once you work up an appetite, grab lunch at the bustling and historic Borough Market, and, in the evening, sit down for a pint at a traditional pub.

Highlights

Buckingham Palace (optional)

If you’re interested in all things royal, don’t miss a visit to Buckingham Palace. You don’t have to go inside this lavish landmark to experience its most famous moment: the changing of the guards. Every morning at 10:45, the ritual takes place in front of the palace, where spectators can witness this ceremonious spectacle. If you visit at a different time, however, you can still gain a glimpse of the palace’s exterior, imagining the glamor and history within.

Borough Market Lunch (optional)

In London, there’s no better crowd-pleasing lunch than one at the diverse and delicious Borough Market. This vast food hall serves absolutely everything from warm potatoes blanketed in gooey raclette to Scotch eggs and sausage rolls. If you’re not in the mood for British cuisine, however, all kinds of international vendors serve food here, too, so you can try the likes of Greek, Middle Eastern, and Taiwanese dishes, among a slew of other cuisines.
