Luxuries of Luxor and the Start of Your Cruise
Overview
Get ready for the next stage of your journey — today's river cruise — as you check out of your hotel after breakfast. Yet, before you head to the water, you'll spend more time on land, experiencing the highlights of Luxor. First on the docket, you'll visit the Karnak Temple Complex, which houses three main temples as well as several enclosed temples and a number of outer temples. As a collective, these temples combine the achievements of generations of ancient builders over a period of some 1,500 years. Around 30 different pharaohs contributed to the process of building this site, further adding to its lore. From here, it's time to head to the port. You'll register and board your cruise, before tucking in to a delightful lunch on board. Your time in Luxor isn't over quite yet, however, as you'll spend this afternoon at the Luxor Temple, unpacking its historical significance on an intriguing visit. Finally, you'll return to your ship and enjoy your first dinner on the water. Tonight, you'll settle into your cabin, falling asleep in your new, soon-to-be-moving, home base. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Highlights
Day in Luxor
Among the best-known cities in Upper Egypt, Luxor, originally called "Thebes" in ancient Egypt, has also been equated to the world's greatest open-air museum. As you experience the city's temples and museums today, you'll understand this nickname's validity; the ruins of the early Temples of Karnak and Luxor — which you'll visit today — hover in the modern city's East Bank. Meanwhile, the West Bank encompasses a slew of monuments, tombs, and temples, such as the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens.
Luxor Temple
Largely built by the New Kingdom pharaohs Amenhotep III (1390 to 1352 BC) and Ramses II (1279 to 1213 BC), Luxor Temple materializes as a strikingly graceful monument in the heart of the modern town. Also known as the Southern Sanctuary, the temple was primarily used for the annual Opet celebrations, when the statues of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu were brought from Karnak along the Avenue of Sphinxes — only to reunite at the temple.
Nile River Cruise
This afternoon, you'll board your Nile cruise, seeing the silhouette and skyline of Luxor from the water. As the world's longest river, the Nile flows across Egypt, running through Africa's northwest and into the Mediterranean Sea. It also flows throughout other African countries, connecting places far and wide. As you spend tonight on the Nile, you'll begin to peel back a layer of this multifaceted river, experiencing its magnitude and majesty firsthand.
