Elephants En Route to Agra

Agra Fort1.jpeg

Overview

After two days in Delhi, you'll head to your next destination — Agra, a historic city on the banks of the Yamuna River. Best known for its iconic Taj Mahal, Agra is about four hours south of Delhi, though rather than do this drive in one go, you'll make a notable stop along the way. This morning, you'll visit a local elephant rehabilitation center, which cares for rescued elephants in a safe and compassionate environment. You'll tour the sanctuary, learn about elephant preservation endeavors, and meet some of the local animals alongside your on-site conservationist guides. After your memorable morning with elephants, you'll switch from nature to culture and arrive in Agra by the afternoon. You'll have some free time upon arrival, so you can check in and refresh after your long journey. Later in the day, you'll meet your Agra expert guide to explore the majestic Agra Fort, a red sandstone citadel that once served as the seat of the Mughal Empire. Now, the landmark provides fascinating insights into royal life and history — the best context for your time in this fascinating and fabled city.

Highlights

Elephant Conservation and Care Center

You don't have to stray far from Delhi to stumble across local wildlife. This morning's guided detour will lead you to an elephant conservation and care center focused on protecting India's wild elephant population. The center rescues, treats, and cares for elephants exploited in the abusive tourism and “begging elephant” industries, and aims to end the plight of injured and sick elephants forced to work in unnatural conditions.

Agra Fort

Just a few miles northwest of the Taj Majal, Agra Fort dates back to 1565 and was the primary palace of the Rajput lord of the Sikarwar clan until the Mughals took over. With double walls that rise more than 20 meters — nearly 66 feet — the fort exceeds a mile in circumference and can therefore be described as a "walled city." As you'll discover during today's guided Agra Fort tour, the fort continues to wear the power of its history, as the military now uses a large portion of the base.

Agra

Anchored in history and grandeur, Agra is the best introduction to India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The city's rich heritage reflects the opulent legacy of the Mughal Empire, which materializes through the city's famous Taj Mahal. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, this marble mausoleum stands as an eternal symbol of love, and is instantly synonymous with India's architectural prowess.
