Overview

Today’s journey takes you along one of the most remarkable roads in all of Canada — the Dempster Highway, a 740-kilometer (460-mile) route linking Dawson to Inuvik and the only all-season road to cross the Arctic Circle. To get there, you’ll meet your expert local guide for a private tour, venturing into Tombstone Territorial Park, where you’ll have ample chances to see wildlife, take photos, and bask in the bold beauty of this unique locale. The day's highlight, however, materializes not on land but in the sky as you’ll then board a private sightseeing flight over the Ogilvie Mountains, gaining an unforgettable perspective on the vastness and texture of the northern wilderness. Once you’re back on solid ground, you’ll have free time to partake in any and all Dawson experiences. Consider braving a classic town ritual to taste the famous and notorious Sourtoe Cocktail at the Downtown Hotel’s Sourdough Saloon. This tradition involves a cocktail containing a dehydrated toe and is a Dawson rite of passage that both tells a story and gives you new stories to tell. Fueled by the adrenaline from this toe cocktail, you may choose to end your night with another aurora tour; you have one more slated for either tonight or tomorrow.

Highlights

Private Dempster Highway Tour

Hit the road with your expert local guide on today’s tour of the Dempster Highway. This morning, you’ll set off on a scenic drive along a portion of this world-famous highway and into Tombstone Territorial Park — a place of rugged wilderness known for wide, open spaces, incredible scenery, and palpable solitude. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to get out and explore on foot or snowshoe, take in panoramic viewpoints, and enjoy a hearty picnic lunch. Be on the lookout for wildlife; you never know when the area’s animals may make an appearance.

Cessna Flight Over the Ogilvie Mountains

Gain a bird’s-eye view of the Yukon from this small plane sightseeing adventure, during which you’ll fly over the Ogilvie Mountains and into the drama of a Dawson winter. Helmed by an expert local pilot, today’s flightseeing tour promises scenic thrills, once-in-a-lifetime memories, and new perspectives on this unforgettable environment.

Sourtoe Cocktail (optional)

If you’ve ever wanted to drink a toe, now’s your chance. A hallmark of Dawson’s reputation since 1973, the Sourtoe Cocktail is exactly what it sounds like and abides by the famous motto: “You can drink it fast, you can drink it slow, but your lips must touch the toe.” Given its fame, it’s drawn more than 100,000 daring participants to the Sourtoe Cocktail Club, eager to sip from a drink garnished with this amputated toe.
