Overview

Rise and shine for another fantastic day in La Fortuna! This morning, you'll set off on a thrilling, half-day tour of the rainforest, enjoying its many sights and sounds by way of the water. After breakfast, you'll meet up with a local expert adventurer for a guided paddling foray down the Peñas Blancas River. Equal parts exhilarating and scenic, the day's tour showcases the best of the natural environment. Meaning, you're likely to see an abundance of the monkeys, sloths, iguanas, crocodiles, and numerous tropical birds that define the area. When this half-day tour concludes, you'll have the remainder of the day and night to explore the region at your own pace. Use this free time to dry off and soak in the one-of-a-kind atmosphere of this spectacular section of Costa Rica. Whether that means chowing down on fresh, local fruit or relaxing at your hotel, the choice is all yours. (Breakfast)

Highlights

Guided Paddling Tour

Gear up for a true Costa Rican adventure on today's guided paddling tour, which will send you drifting down the Peñas Blancas River. Alongside an expert local guide, you'll safely navigate the water, all the while learning about the most interesting plants and animals you encounter en route. There's no better or more immersive way to experience the rainforest, which comes to life without the interfering noises of a boat motor.

Lomas del Volcan (or similar)

You'll have free time today, which means you can take advantage of your home base. Take a moment to sip freshly brewed coffee — or a cocktail — from the balcony of your bungalow as you gaze out at the intersecting shades of green in the horizon. You can also wander along the on-property trail, which takes you just a short distance into the tropical rainforest – yet far enough to experience the environment’s perks. Keep your eyes peeled for a variety of birds, mammals, and blooming flowers as you explore the grounds at your leisure.

Accommodations

Lomas del Volcán (or similar)

Lomas del Volcán is a warm mountain hotel that maintains a rustic style with wood cabins. Each comes with two decks that invite you to enjoy nature, one with a view of the Arenal Volcano and the other peering out at the tropical forest. It was founded in the year 2000 and sits atop a hill within a cattle farm property of 150 hectares, far from the noises of the everyday. Defined instead by the song of the birds, the hotel allows guests to observe a range of plants and animals from this region of Costa Rica.
