Priorat's Monastic History and Magnificent Wines
Overview
From the Ebro Delta to wine country, today's road trip will be a fun one. This morning, check out of your hotel and drive to Spain's Priorat region, known for its legendary wines and rugged, wild landscapes. The drive to Priorat takes around two hours or less, but you'll stop about midway at the Cartuja de Escaladei: a monastery that doubles as the historic cradle of Priorat, where Carthusian monks first introduced viticulture to the area. Here you will participate in a one-of-a-kind virtual reality experience. Continue onward to the village of Siurana, perched on an impressive cliff, and take time to stroll and perhaps enjoy lunch in tandem with the views. Make sure to save room for wine, as the afternoon leads you to the prestigious Domenech Family Winery (or similar), where you'll partake in a guided wine tasting with the on-site expert. During this experience, you'll uncover the unique grape culture and winemaking processes of this famous region. After the wine visit, you'll continue to your final destination. Check in at the exclusive Palauet del Priorat (or similar), an elegant manor house. You're on your own for the rest of tonight, so you're free to savor dinner, a glass of wine, and a good night's sleep however you see fit. (Breakfast)
Highlights
Priorat Region Wine Tasting
Dotted with rugged mountains and local, family-run wineries, Priorat is both wild and sweet, straddling the magical line between extremes. As you venture into this unchartered territory of terroir today, you'll encounter a tough land, where bare rock is the predominant element. Achieving agricultural yield from this harsh environment is no easy feat, but Priorat has never been one to shy away from a challenge. To truly savor the unique beauty of this region, you'll enjoy a guided wine tasting, trying the land's signature drink.
Cartuja de Escaladei
First on the day's docket, you'll stop at this historic monastery founded by French monks. Cartuja de Escaladei is more than a site of spiritual significance, however, as the monastery's ruins are also among the most beautiful vantage points in the entire area. Located at the base of the Monstant mountains, the monastery now invites visitors to explore the site's cloisters, church, and refectory, walking in the footsteps of monks and learning about the past's most fascinating details — and their overlap with wine history. The day's visit also includes "Els Ulls de la Història" (The Eyes of History), a unique virtual reality experience in which you'll examine the past through the lens of a monk.
