Stakna Gompa

Monastery in Matho

Small but visually impressive, the 1618 Stakna Gompa crowns a rocky outcrop that rises abruptly from the Indus Valley floor. The heart of the complex is a small, dazzlingly colourful inner courtyard, off of which are several interesting rooms with vivid Tantric murals, silver chortens and grey-bearded figures of Bhutanese lama Zhabthang Rimpoche.

It's across the bridge from Km448.7 on the Leh–Karu road, 800m on foot, double if you wind up the access road.
