Stretched along the banks of Niger River, Faranah is an attractive little place that was the home town of former president Sékou Touré. During his reign Touré poured money into Faranah, turning it from humble backwater into a potential future capital. He built extravagant palaces, wide streets and an airport with a runway long enough to accommodate a Concorde. Today it's all fading back to dust and Faranah is once again returning to its farming and marketplace roots.
