About Miles

I grew up in the suburbs of Boston, steps away from the rustling woods of the Middlesex Fells Reservation. Family forays on the labyrinth of trails running through this forest got me hooked on hiking and long scenic walks—which I now write about for publications as The Boston Globe, National Geographic, Yankee Magazine, and of course, Lonely Planet. I've worked as a backcountry lodge caretaker in New Hampshire's White Mountains, I've written two guidebooks on New England hiking and road tripping, and most recently, I created a 25-mile hiking trail through Boston's parks and urban forests (the Walking City Trail). On any given day, you'll find me walking to someplace unfamiliar in the city or the backcountry...as long as there's the promise of a hearty meal or a hot shower at the end of the pilgrimage.
