    Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

At 7.5km long, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is one of the world’s longest gondola cableways and provides a bird’s-eye view over the tropical rainforest. The journey takes about 90 minutes. It includes two stops along the way and features boardwalks that have interpretive panels and passes Barron Falls (which is reduced to a small stream in the Dry). The last departure from Cairns and Kuranda is at 3.45pm; transfers to and from the terminal (15 minutes’ drive north of Cairns) and combination deals (Scenic Railway and Skyrail) are available. As space is limited, only day packs are allowed on board.

  11. Poseidon Reef Trips

The family-run Poseidon Reef suits fast day divers.

The unrelenting surge of visitors to the Reef off Port Douglas has impacted on its general condition, and although you'll still see colourful corals and marine life, it has become patchy in parts. Reef trips generally include reef tax, snorkelling and transfers from your accommodation, plus lunch and refreshments. Add around A$200/around A$180 for an introductory/certified dive.

    Whitsunday Great Walk

The Whitsunday Great Walk is perhaps a little boastfully named, although it is a pefectly enjoyable three day stroll. Ironically, it's not in the Whitsundays, as such, although you're rarely far from an arresting view of the islands.

Spanning 30km (18.6mi) of the Conway State Forest, from Brandy Creek to Airlie Beach, the Great Walk is a leisurely three-day hike through coastal rainforest. The Whitsundays themselves are visible from many points on the trail (including the summit of Mt Hayward), and there's always the chance of spotting an orange-footed scrub fowl or a wompoo fruit dove closer to hand. Shorter side walks can be attempted if time is pressing, but if you do…

    Merrick's Learn to Surf

With a string of fine breaks around an unspoilt national park, Noosa is a fine place to catch a wave. The best year-round break is probably Sunshine Corner, at the northern end of Sunshine Beach, though it has a brutal beach dump. The point breaks (First Point to Granite Bay) around the headland only perform during the summer, but when they do, expect wild conditions and good walls at Boiling Point and Tea Tree, on the northern coast of the headland.

Noosa Spit, on the far end of Hastings St, has gentle breaks that are heavenly for the novice - unlike at Sunshine Beach, riders are protected from open water so the rips tend to be less intense. It seems someone is always le…
