Lonely Planet review for Harbor Defense Museum entrance
Just below the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is Fort Hamilton (1826), run by future Confederate general Robert E Lee in the 1840s. The fort is still an active army base, but you can tour much of it anyway (bring a photo ID to get in). Part of the old storage area has been transformed into the Harbor Defense Museum.
