Bus

Peter Pan Bus Lines (800-343-9999; www.peterpanbus.com) connects New Haven with NYC ($24.50, 2½ hours, four daily), Hartford ($11.50, one hour, four daily), Springfield ($21, two hours, four daily) and Boston ($30, four hours, five daily), as does Greyhound Bus Lines (203-772-2470, 800-221-2222; www.greyhound.com), inside New Haven’s Union Station (203-773-6177; 50 Union Ave).

Connecticut Limousine (800-472-5466; www.ctlimo.com) runs buses between New Haven and NYC’s airports (La Guardia and JFK, plus Newark) for around $50 per person.

Air

Bus Gof Connecticut Transit (203-624-0151) gets you to Tweed New Haven Airport (203-466-8833; www.flytweed.com; I-95 exit 50), from where several commuter airlines can take you to Boston or New York.

Car & motorcycle

Avis and Hertz rent cars at Tweed New Haven Airport. Both can be reached by calling 203-466-8833. New Haven is 141 miles southwest of Boston, 36 miles south of Hartford, 75 miles from New York and 101 miles from Providence via interstate highways.

Boat

The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company (CT 888-443-3779, Long Island 631-473-0286; www.bpjferry.com; 102 W Broadway, Port Jefferson, NY) operates its daily car ferries year-round between Bridgeport, 10 miles southwest of New Haven, and Port Jefferson on Long Island about every 1½ hours. The one-way 1½-hour voyage costs $15.75 for adults, $11 for seniors, and is free for children 12 and under. The fee for a car is $44.50 not including passenger fares, depending on the number of passengers. Call to reserve space for your car.

Train

Metro-North (212-532-4900, 800-223-6052, 800-638-7646) trains make the 1½-hour run between NYC’s Grand Central Terminal and New Haven’s Union Station (203-773-6177; 50 Union Ave), at I-95 exit 47, almost every hour from 7am to midnight on weekdays, with more frequent trains during the morning and evening rush hours. On weekends, trains run about every two hours. Shore Line East runs Commuter Connection buses (203-624-0151) that shuttle passengers from Union Station (in the evenings) and from State St Station (in the mornings) to New Haven Green.

Frequent Amtrak trains (800-872-7245) run from NYC’s Penn Station to New Haven’s Union Station, but at a higher fare than Metro-North. Shore Line East (800-255-7433) travels up the shore of Long Island Sound. At New Haven, the trains connect with Metro-North and Amtrak routes.
