    Chinois

Wolfgang Puck scores again, this time with signature Cal-Asian fusion served in a chic Far East–meets–West Coast setting. Pair the firecracker shrimp with a sugared tower of mochi (pounded rice cakes) or a premium glass of cold sake. It’s only a deal at lunch. Also recommended: 808 Chef Jean-Marie Josselin dials Hawaii on the coconut wireless daily to procure the raw goods that fuel this Pacific Rim delight. Don’t neglect the ‘deconstructed’ ahi roll. Cypress Street Marketplace Charge made-to-order salads and pizza, Asian stir-fries and healthy wraps to your ‘smart’ card, then pay as you exit the food court. Tables overlook the casino floor. Fremont

The Fremont casino hotel has been packing ’em in since 1956, when it opened as downtown’s first high-rise and the tallest building in Nevada. Separating it from the motley pack was wall-to-wall carpeting –almost all of the other nearby casinos still had sawdust floors then. It was here that legendary lounge singer Wayne Newton (aka Mr Las Vegas) launched his career. Despite these firsts, the Fremont has since slipped into mediocrity these days. With its weak tropical motif, the 32,000-sq-ft casino is nothing special, except for its purple felt tables and location in the middle of the Fremont Street Experience which has made it a favorite with many gamblers, not to…

    Lion Habitat

Out front of the MGM Grand, it’s hard to miss the USA’s largest bronze statue, a 100,000lb lion that’s 45ft tall, perched atop a pedestal and ringed by lush landscaping, spritzing fountains and Atlas-themed statues. Inside you’ll find the MGM’s real-life lion habitat. MGM owns these magnificent felines, all descendants of the movie company’s original mascot. Only two animals are shown off inside this multimillion-dollar enclosure at any one time. The big cats tend to sprawl and sleep atop the see-through walkway tunnel, separated from their admirers only by a sheet of protective glass and a couple of feet of thin air. Caretaker Keith Evans has been working with…

    Guardian Angel Cathedral

If you get the urge to save your soul Sunday morning after letting it all go to hell Saturday night, you won’t have to venture far off the Strip. Adorned with stained glass murals and mosaics, this small Catholic church, which resembles a ski chalet, looks rather alien on the Strip. Even more strangely, it was built with mob money from Moe Dalitz, who donated funds expressly so that graveyard shift workers at casino hotels would have someplace to worship. The iconic 1960s structure was designed by SoCal modernist Paul Revere Williams, the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects, who also collaborated on the landmark Googie-style Theme…

    Mandalay Bay

The tropical-themed ‘M-Bay’ fails to match the grandeur of Vegas’ more famous mega-resorts, although high-stakes gamblers will appreciate a classy casino that seems as limitless as the credit line needed to play here. Everything can be a spectacle here, if you only know where to look.

Big-name bands electrify the House of Blues and M-Bay’s events center, catsuit-clad ‘angels’ scale the wine tower at Aureole, and sable fur coats are loaned to enter the frozen vodka locker inside Red Square. Stylish boutique extras include Mandalay Place, a skybridge shopping promenade, and the minimalist modern THEhotel with its lofty Mix bar and bathhouse spa.

  10. Lake Las Vegas

A lake in the middle of the southern Nevada desert? Hard to believe, but yes, it’s true. After the damning of the Las Vegas Wash in 1991, this small artificial lake near Lake Mead was created. Nowadays it’s a hoity-toity resort with a country-club atmosphere, and it feels a world away from the Strip. A refreshing oasis in summer, the focus of the resort, to which public access is unrestricted, is its palatial residential homes and grand hotels like the Ritz-Carlton Lake Las Vegas and Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort, complete with championship golf courses including Reflection Bay. Kayaks, jet skis and sailboats can be rented from MonteLago Village Marina, where one-hour…
