Sovrana Spa
At first blush it looks like just another local massage salon. Then you’ll notice the gallery is stocked with all-natural aromatic oils, soaps and creams, which seems like reason enough to indulge in a massage, facial or both.

Phuket Scuba Club
This ecologically sensitive outfitter has a shop here and another on Karon. It can arrange day trips to Racha Yai and Racha Noi Shark Point et al, as well as live aboards to the Similan Islands, and it’s the only shop in the area to offer two beach dives from Hat Karon daily (11am and 3pm). The visibility isn’t as magical as more distant reefs, but there are interesting fish around, plus it’s close, so you’ll be able to slip underwater and be back with the family in no time.

Amazing Bike Tours
Phuket’s best new adventure outfitter leads small groups on back-road bicycle tours through incredibly scenic countryside. In addition to its half-day rides through Thalang, which take in the Khao Phra Thaew National Park, it offers terrific day trips through Ko Yao Noi and the overlooked yet gorgeous beaches and waterfalls of Thai Muang in nearby Phang-Nga province.

Dino Park
Jurassic Park meets minigolf at this bizarre park on the southern edge of Hat Karon. It’s a maze of caves, lagoons, leafy gardens, dinosaur statues and, of course, putting greens. Kids will dig it the most.

Warm Water Divers
One of the top dive outfitters on the island, Warm Water Divers offers all the courses and day trips (Racha Yai, Racha Noi Shark Point, King Cruiser, Anemone etc), but its live-aboard dive cruises to the Similans are a cut above the rest thanks to the stunning Chinese wooden sailing ship The June Hong Chian Lee (aka Respect Wind Travel Forever). It also leads half-day guided kayaking trips to remote and pristine beaches along the west coast, south of Patong.

Atsumi Healing
Atsumi isn’t just a spa, it’s an earthy fasting and detox retreat centre. Most guests come to fast on water, juice and/or herbs for days at a time. Massages are a part of the program, and the regularly eating public is welcome to book massages here. In addition to traditional Thai, oil and deep-tissue treatments, you can get the signature ThaiAtsu massage (think Thai meets shiatsu). Meditative and gentle yoga classes with a touch of t’ai chi are also available.

Nicky’s Handlebar
The tumbledown biker bar is a fun blast of Easy Rider nostalgia, but you’re here to hire a Harley of your own. Kai and Nicky, the brothers behind this shop, have a sick showroom with a dozen big bikes. All of them hover around 1500cc, so these aren’t for amateurs. You’ll need a big bike license from your native land, but you won’t need a map. Nicky and Kai have been leading Harley tours in and around Phuket for a decade.

Aspasia
A brilliant day spa option is hidden away at this unique condo resort on the headland between Kata and Karon. The interior is cosy and very Zen with sliding rice-paper doors dividing the treatment rooms. Try the red sweet body scrub, a mixture of sesame, honey and fresh orange juice. Or maybe you’d rather the coconut and passionfruit exfoliation? It also has a full-service beauty salon and offers a variety of massage styles.

Kok Chang Safari
This well-run, attractive elephant camp is easily one of the best in Phuket – if not the best. (Most importantly, the animals here are healthy.) Tours last 30 minutes to an hour. If you do the full hour (1000B), you’ll have a magical view from the top of the mountain. Or you could always ditch the elephant trek and just hang with Charlie, a friendly and damn handsome monkey. He chills at the house.

Sala Resort & Spa
Enjoy your aromatherapy massage or herbal body scrub at the hip and sexy, yet not full of itself, Sala Resort. The villa property is a blend of Sino-Portuguese and art deco influences with a modern flair. The black-granite infinity pool at the beachfront is gorgeous, and the beachfront bar area includes cushy, circular sofa lounges. It’s the kind of place that makes everyone feel like a celebrity.

Boat Charters
Rawai is the best place to charter a boat to the neighbouring islands. You can lounge on nearby Ko Bon (800/2000B long tail/speedboat), snorkel off Coral island (1200/3000B) or Ko Racha (3000/7000B), and explore Ko Kai (4000/8000B). There are several reliable captains along the waterfront. Unfortunately, they no longer serve Ko Phi Phi. For private Phi Phi charters enquire at Chalong pier.

John Gray's Sea Canoe
The original, still the most reputable and by far the most ecologically sensitive sea-kayaking company on the island. Like any good brand in Thailand, his 'Seacanoe' name and itineraries have been frequently copied. He's north of Phuket Town.

Aqua Divers
The lone dive outfitter on the beach, it can take you to Phuket’s dive mainstays in the south, but you’ll probably choose to visit a few of the nearly two-dozen sites within 15 minutes of the beach. Nearby Ko Waeo is surrounded by vibrant coral, and there’s a sunken tin-mining platform, which is also a popular dive. Aqua Divers can also send you on day trips to the Similans.

Ocean Divers
A veteran dive outfitter, Ocean Divers is Thai owned and operated and has been doing its thing since 1979. It offers live aboards to the Similan Islands, Ko Bon, Ko Tachai and Richelieu Rock, as well as day trips to Ko Racha Yai, Shark Point, King Cruiser Wreck and Ko Phi-Phi. And it has been recognised as a top eco-outfitter for its underwater garbage collection efforts.

Paradise Diving
One of the best outfitters on the island, with speedboats on both sides of the north coast, nobody gets you from Phuket to Phi-Phi or the Similans faster than Paradise. As a result, day trips include three tanks and two meals. Paradise offers local dives at Ko Waeo and its shallow house reef, and you can charter its speedboat for tours through gorgeous Ao Phang-Nga.

Indigo Spa
Set in a 277-room megaresort that doubles as a monument to Phuket’s tin-mining past – hardware such as vices, scales and other mining tools are used in the decor down to the tiniest detail – this is a fantastic spa. Treatments include a moist chocolate-pudding scrub, and a pearl wrap featuring vegetal extracts of local cultured pearls.

All 4 Diving
Not just a full-service dive school (staff can teach you to become a dive master if you have the required 55 logged dives) and recreational dive centre, but also one of the best dive superstores in Phuket. It also books live aboards to the Similan Islands and day trips to local reefs (Ko Racha Yai and Sharkpoint, among them).
