  1. Barnens Zoo

    Slottsskogsparken contains Barnens Zoo and Djurgårdarna, an animal park with farm animals, elk, deer and other Swedish animals and birds. Feeding time at the seal pond is daily.

  2. Botaniska Trädgården

    Sweden's largest botanical garden is the Botaniska Trädgården, with around 12,000 plant species.

  3. Domkyrkan

    Göteborg's churches aren't very old but they're a truer reflection of Swedish architecture than Stockholm's Italian imitations. The classical Domkyrkan was consecrated in 1815 - two previous cathedrals were destroyed by town fires.

  4. Elfsborgs Fortress

    At the mouth of the Göta älv, squat red Elfsborgs Fortress has had an interesting history. It was built in the 17th century to defend the young city from Danish attack, and saw action again in the early 18th century during the Great Nordic War. Visitors can see the church built for Karl XII's troops, and the dungeons for when they stepped out-of-line.

  5. Göteborgs Maritima Centrum

    Göteborgs Maritima Centrum , by the opera house north of the centre, says it's the largest floating ship museum in the world and usually displays 13 historical ships, including the submarine Nordkaparen .

  6. Göteborgs-Utkiken

    The red-and-white 'skyscraper' Göteborgs-Utkiken , nicknamed 'The Lipstick' by city-dwellers, has superior views of the harbour from the top.

  7. Haga District

    The Haga District, south of the canal, is Göteborg's oldest suburb, dating back to 1648. In the 1980s and '90s, the area was thoroughly renovated and now includes shops and restaurants.

  9. Hasselblad Center

    There's an interesting sculpture hall at the Konstmuseet, the Hasselblad Center photographic collection, and temporary exhibitions covering the latest in Nordic art.

  10. Keillers Park

    The rocky heights of Ramberget (87m) in Keillers Park give the best view of the city. You can get there on the city bus tour, or take a tram to Ramsbergsvallen and walk up.

  12. Konstmuseet

    The main art collections are at Konstmuseet, with impressive collections of Nordic and European masters (notable for works by Rubens, Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Picasso) and touring exhibitions.

  13. Kronhuset

    Kronhuset, lying between Postgatan and Kronhusgatan, is the city's oldest secular building, a former arsenal built in Dutch style between 1642 and 1654. It was here that Karl X held the disastrous riksdag (parliament) in 1660 - he died while it was in session.

  14. Liseberg Funpark

    The Liseberg fun park is dominated by its futuristic spaceportlike tower. The ride to the top, some 83m above the ground, climaxes in a spinning dance and a breathtaking view of the city. The other amusements and rides seem tame by comparison but there's no lack of variety. You can buy a pass that allows you to ride the attractions all day. There are often summer shows and concerts staged here.

  15. Maritiman

    Near the opera house north of the centre is the largest floating ship museum, the Maritiman, in the world! It's made up of 19 historical crafts, including fishing boats, a light vessel and a firefighter, linked by walkways. Shinny down into the 69m-long submarine Nordkaparen, a throat-tightening glimpse into underwater warfare. Another highlight is the museum's biggest craft, the labyrinthine 121m-long destroyer Småland, which saw service from 1952 to 1979.

  16. Masthuggskyrkan

    One of the most impressive buildings in Göteborg, Masthuggskyrkan was completed in 1914, and its interior is like an upturned boat. The church is also a great viewpoint for the western half of the city.

  17. Natural History Museum

    The Natural History Museum contains the world's only stuffed blue whale. You could once walk inside its mouth, until an amorous couple were discovered inside and the jaws were firmly shut. As natural history museums go, this is a large and impressive one, with some 10 million specimens of wildlife from around the world. To get there, take tram 1 or 6.

    Just off Linnégatan in Slottsskogsparken, Naturhistoriska Museet, the natural history museum, has a collection of some 10 million specimens of wildlife from around the world. Take tram Nos 1 or 2.

    One remarkable 19th-century church is the neo-Gothic Oscar Fredriks kyrka .

  20. Palmhuset

    Laid out in 1842, the lovely Trädgårdsföreningen contains the 19th-century Palmhuset. This graceful building is a miniature version of Crystal Palace in London, with five differently heated halls: plant highlights include the camellia collection and the 2m-wide tropical lily pads.

    The excellent Röhsska Museet covers modern Scandinavian design and decorative arts, but also contains classical and Oriental items, and a design store and popular café.

  23. Sjöfartsmuseet

    The main museum of maritime history, Sjöfartsmuseet, is near Stigbergstorget about 2km west of the city centre. There's an interesting aquarium attached. Take tram Nos 3, 9 or 11.

  24. Slottsskogsparken

    In Göteborg's southwest is Slottsskogsparken, the 'lungs' of the city; the Botanic Gardens - the largest in Sweden - are nearby.

    The Stadsmuseum has archaeological, local and historical collections, including Sweden's only original Viking ship.

    There are some lovely green oases in the city, including Trädgårdsföreningen, laid out in 1842 and home to a couple of pretty cafés, a rosarium and a palm house.

  27. Universeum

    By Liseberg is the striking Universeum, a huge and impressive 'science discovery centre' featuring everything from rainforests to a shark tank. It has great displays and hands-on experiments, but it's not cheap to visit (use the Göteborg Pass).
