Activities in The East

  1. Peacock Rock

A demanding hike is the six-hour round trip to the summit of the densely forested Peacock Rock (to make it appear more peacock-like, drink a couple of bottles of arrack before viewing…). There is no set trail up the mountain and you’ll need a guide, which can be organised through most guest houses for around Rs 800 to 1000. From the summit you can check the surf at Arugam Bay on a clear day.

  2. A-bay Surf Shop

This long-standing surf shop has the best selection of boards suitable for learners. In addition it offers a ding-repair service, wax, sunscreen and surf lessons.

  3. Mambo’s

A wide range of bashed-up boards, including some that are better suited to more experienced surfers, can be found at this excellent guest house.

  4. Arugam Bay Hilton Guest House

As well as some not very learner-friendly boards, this guest house also offers decent overnight surf tours (Rs 7000 for two people).

  5. Surf & Sun

The surf-savvy owners of this guest house organise surfing excursions. The boards available for hire aren’t ideal for learners.
