    The Running of the Bulls

    Liberated, obsessive, or plain mad is how you might describe aficionados (and there are many) who regularly take part in Pamplona's Sanfermines (Fiesta de San Fermín), a nonstop cacophony of music, dance, fireworks, processions - and the small matter of running alongside a handful of agitated, horn-tossing toros - that takes place from 6 to 14 July each year.

    El Encierro, the running of the bulls from their corrals to the bullring for the afternoon bullfight, takes place in Pamplona, every morning during Sanfermines.   2. Balneario

    The Balneario is a luxurious spa complex recently remodelled by star architect Rafael Moneo. Given its prestige, the Balneario's prices are surprisingly reasonable, with a €30 entry fee allowing access to the baths and gym, while a range of additional treatments is available. As well as such services, the setting is stunning, alongside a lake in an enclosed valley high in the Pyrenees.

  3. Donosti Tour

    This one-day bus tour allows you to hop on and off as often as you wish. Tickets, which include headphones for commentary in your choice of language, are sold on the bus. The main route stays close to the beaches and climbs Monte Igueldo. A second route operates from July to September, heading further inland along the river and visits the Museo Chillida Lek. Check with the tourist office for times.

  4. Walking Tour

    An enjoyable way of catching a close quarters' flavour of Bilbao is on a walking tour of the Casco Viejo and of the Ensanche-Abandoibarra district on the west side of the Riá de Bilbao. They are led by local guides who have excellent language skills, great knowledge of the city and infectious enthusiasm. The tours last 90 minutes. Ask at tourist offices for times.

    Pukas

    Playa de Gros, with its generally mellow and easy waves, is a good place for learners to get to grips with surfing. Aspiring surfer wannabes should drop by Pukas, where surf lessons, and board and wetsuit hire are available. Prices vary depending on group size and lesson length, but start at €53 for a weekend course comprising a 1½-hour lesson each day.
