AUGUST 03, 2009

>> Lonely Planet supports The World at Edinburgh Festival

The World is an amazing place. Remind yourself of this fact by getting down to The World Festival (www.theworldfestival.com) in Edinburgh, supported by Lonely Planet. African, Caribbean and South American acts will set the stage alight with their music, dance, acrobatics and theatre. Choose from a myriad of marvels, such as Mercy Madonna of Malawi, a hilarious, heartbreaking piece about what happens when the worlds of celebrity and poverty collide. Sizzling-hot club the Church of Salsa is going to turn nights into fiestas from 12th to 29th August.  Then there’s the Creole Choir of Cuba, Fanti acrobats from Ghana, and the jaw dropping, muscle-rippling feats of the Capoeira Knights from Brazil.

>> Signspotting in Edinburgh

If you’re in Edinburgh for the Fringe, then why not head down to Princes Mall for a bit of Signspotting. The author of Lonely Planet Signspotting 1 and 2 has recreated the weird and wonderful signs featured in the books in a street exhibition. This hugely popular exhibition has already appeared in Stockholm, Copenhagen and Arhus, with Gothenburg still to come later this summer.

>> Travelling Playlists

Every great trip is accompanied by a great soundtrack. Whether its London Calling by the Clash for a trip round London or anything by Kraftwerk for a true German-techo experience; the iPod is now an important part of any kit list.

Each week, Lonely Planet will create a travel playlist using traveller suggestions on www.Spotify.com and share the love on www.Sharemyplaylists.com. Travellers can join the group at LonelyPlanet.com to share their top tunes for the playlist of the week at http://tinyurl.com/lp-playlist

This week’s playlist list is USA. Look out for England, India, Scotland and Thailand over the next few weeks.

A Year of Watching Wildlife

Every week of the year, something astounding happens in the animal kingdom. A million wildebeest trek 800km across the Serengeti; killer whales surf Argentinean beaches; lizards fly like paper planes in the jungles of Borneo; 10 million puffins descend on Iceland; and the world’s biggest feeding frenzy takes place off the coast of South Africa.

Wildlife-watching is one of the most exciting reasons to travel, and Lonely Planet’s new book, A Year of Watching Wildlife shows you where, when and how to take part in the natural world’s greatest happenings.

Images and extracts are available.
