Activities in Tongariro National Park

  1. Turoa Ski Area

    Ruapehu’s Turoa Ski Area offers skiing to suit all levels: around 400 hectares of field each, both taking you up to a maximum altitude of around 2300m. Beginners are well catered for, with gear hire, ski school, good learner areas and some nice easy runs. During the ski season you can tune into SKI FM 93.4, Aerial FM 96.6 or Peak FM 95.8 for updates on the slopes, or ring the Snowphone.

  5. Whakapapa Nature Walk

    A 15-minute loop track suitable for wheelchairs, beginning about 200m above the visitor centre and passing through beech forest and gardens typical of the park’s vegetation zones.

    A two-hour, 6km loop track to the 20m Taranaki Falls on Wairere Stream.

  7. Tama Lakes

    A 17km track to the Tama Lakes (five to six hours return), on the Tama Saddle between Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe. The upper lake affords fine views of Ngauruhoe and Tongariro (beware of winds on the saddle).

  8. Silica Rapids

    A 2½-hour, 7km loop track to the Silica Rapids, named for the silica mineral deposits formed there by the rapids on Waikare Stream. The track passes interesting alpine features and, in the final 2.5km, passes down Top of the Bruce Rd above Whakapapa Village.

  9. Ridge Track

    A 30-minute return walk that climbs through beech forest to alpine-shrub areas for views of Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe.
