  2. Hiroshima Carp game

A love of baseball is not a prerequisite for having a great time at a Hiroshima Carp game. It's just as much fun watching the rowdy, organised enthusiasm of the crowd, especially when the Tokyo Giants come to town. The stadium is just north of the Peace Park, and outfield tickets start at ¥1500.

  3. Naoshima Bath – I Heart Yū

Take a soak at this colourful fusion of Japanese bathing tradition and contemporary art, designed by Ōtake Shinrō, where the elephant in the room is, actually, an elephant in the room. It's a couple of minutes' walk inland from Miyanoura port.

  4. Yuda Onsen

Just west of the city is the 800-year-old Yuda Onsen. The area is covered in a rash of hotels and bathing facilities, mostly along a busy main road; it's not a place for tottering between baths in your yukata. Still, if you've got a bit of time to kill in Yamaguchi, a soak here isn't a bad way to spend a few hours.

You can use the baths at the large Hotel Kamefuku , the less-crowded Kokuminshukusha Koteru and, for a taste of luxury, the traditional ryokan Umenoya.

There's a tourist information office on the main road, where you can pick up a map and guide to all the baths.

Buses run regularly to Yuda Onsen bus stop from Yamaguchi Station (¥190, 10 minutes). They drop you on…

  6. Misen Walk

The ascent of Misen(530m) is the island's finest walk. You can avoid most of the uphill part of the climb by taking the two-stage ropeway, which leaves you with a 20-minute walk to the top. There are monkeys and deer around the cable-car station, and some fantastic views – on clear days you can see across to the mountain ranges of Shikoku. Close to the summit is a temple where Kōbō Daishi meditated for 100 days following his return from China in the 9th century. Next to the main temple hall close to the summit is a flame that's been burning continually since Kōbō Daishi lit it 1200 years ago. From the temple, a path leads down the hillside to Daishō-in and…

  7. Kanka Gorge Ropeway

The cable car is the main attraction in the central mountains, making a spectacular trip through Kanka-kei, particularly when the gorge is ablaze with autumn colours (though be warned that many others have the same idea). Of course, you could just take in the breathtaking views of the Inland Sea from the area around the upper cable-car station without taking the ride. An alternative for keen walkers is to climb between the lower and upper cable-car stations via the Omote 12 Views (表12景; 2.3km) and Ura Eight Views (裏8景; 1.8km) tracks. There are other scenic walks from the upper station, including a hike to the eastern peak of Hoshigajō-yama (星ヶ城東峰;…

  9. Hino-yama Park

About 5km northeast of JR Shimonoseki Station, there are superb views over the Kanmon Straits from the top of 268m-high Hino- yama. To get to the ropeway (火の山ロープウエイ), get off the bus at Mimosusōgawa (御裳川; ¥230). From here it's a steep 10- minute walk to the ropeway entrance. There are buses that drop you at the entrance (Hino-yama ropeway stop), but they only run once an hour from the station.

There are a number of inner-city onsen within a short walk of the station. If you can brave the scorching hot waters, try soaking with the locals at this sentō in the heart of the entertainment district.
