    Nagasaki Harbour Cruises

    This offers a great way to glimpse picturesque Nagasaki (around 1200, one hour). From 20 July to 31 August, join the one-hour midnight cruise (around 1600), then stroll over to Dejima Wharf for a drink or late bite.

  3. Yume-no-yu Onsen

    After a long hike, this welcoming onsen, just in front of JR Aso Station, has wonderful indoor and outdoor pools, a large sauna and private 'family' bath (¥1000 per hour).

    Up-to-date sentō with a pretty rotemburo in a garden.

  5. Yaji-ga-yu

    Loads of atmosphere in this historic wooden sentō (1892) away from the town centre, so old it has no showers; you wash by dipping buckets in the tub.

    This large bathing complex also has glass-blowing workshops (lessons ¥2000 to ¥3000 per 10 to 15 minutes).

    Super-rustic wooden public bath, a few minutes' drive or about 15 minutes on foot from the village centre.

  9. Ibusuki Sunamushi Kaikan Saraku

    On the beachfront, pay at the entrance, change into the provided yukata and wander down to the beach where women with shovels bury you in hot volcanic sand. Reactions range from panic to euphoria. It's said that 10 minutes will get rid impurities, but many stay longer. When you're through, head back up to soak in the onsen.
