Getting around by air

Competition in the European skies has resulted in cheap fares offered by both no-frills airlines and full-service carriers. Discounted web fares are often the best deals for short-haul hops, but as a general rule travel agencies still offer the best options for long-haul flights.

Australia & New Zealand

There are no direct flights from either Australia or New Zealand to Hungary; most fly via London or Frankfurt, with a small minority stopping in at other European capitals.

Consider purchasing a round-the-world ticket or multistop ticket offered by Qantas and British Airways; travel agents will be able to inform you of the most up-to-date prices.

Continental Europe

There are numerous flights to Budapest from a plethora of European cities, including almost all of the capitals on the continent. Middle East

El Al and Wizz Air fly to/from Tel Aviv. Flights from Beirut and Damascus had been suspended at the time of research.

UK & Ireland

Ryanair connects Budapest with Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester and London Stansted, while EasyJet links the Hungarian capital with London Luton and London Gatwick. Wizz Air also flies between London Luton and Budapest.

USA & Canada

There are no direct flights to Hungary from the USA or Canada. There are connections via London and several other European capitals.

International flights land at Terminals 2A and 2B of Ferenc Liszt International Airport on the outskirts of Budapest. Budget carriers use Terminal 2B. Balaton Airport receives Lufthansa flights from Dusseldorf and Frankfurt, among other German destinations, and is located 15km southwest of Keszthely near Lake Balaton.

Malév Hungarian Airlines, the national carrier, was liquidated due to bankruptcy in 2012.
