Metapán Getting there & around

Getting there & around

Metapán's bus terminal is a large dirt lot on the main highway, across from the entrance to town. San Salvador buses are modern especiales, with air-con, video and restroom. There are two departures daily over the mountains to Citalá, near the Honduran border crossing at El Poy - a long, gorgeous ride. A rickety bus follows a mostly unpaved road past dizzying precipices, thick forest and incredible vista points. For once you may not mind the bus' snail-like pace. Buses from Metapán travel to the following destinations:

Anguiatú/Guatemalan borderBus 235 and microbuses (US$0.50, 30 minutes, every 30 minutes from 5:30am to 5:35pm); last bus from border at 6:30pm.

Citalá/Honduran borderBus 463 (US$2, three hours, 5am and noon only).

San Salvador Bus 201A (US$2.50, 1¾ hours, 5:40am, 6:30am, 8:30am, noon, 1pm and 3:15pm); or take any Santa Ana bus to Santa Ana's Metrocentro mall, where you can transfer to a San Salvador bus.

Santa Ana Bus 235 (US$0.85, ordinario 1½ hours, directo one hour, every 15 to 30 minutes from 4:15am to 6:30pm); or take bus 201A to Santa Ana's Metrocentro, and take a cab or local bus into town (US$1.25, 50 minutes).
